Pirates have separated the young nobleman Belmonte from his Constance: in the Seraglio of Bassa Selim, she lives with her maid Blonde in a golden cage. Osmin keeps watch there and threatens anyone who approaches with cruel punishment. Bassa desires Constanze, who is ready to endure "torture of all kinds" for her steadfast love. Then Belmonte comes to kidnap the prisoners ... "The Abduction from the Seraglio" was Mozart's first major opera success in Vienna. In the arias and ensembles, in which young singers can ideally show their skills, Mozart's mature mastery is evident: Serious, even abysmal, is the foundation of this cheerful Singspiel, in which large topics such as trust and compulsion, submission and Freedom, cultural differences and gender roles are negotiated.
