The Novaya Opera Theatre staged the operetta Die Fledermaus by J. Strauss. Dutch director and set designer Mihiel Dijkema defined his main task as follows:

Very often, when you ask viewers who have just watched one of the productions of "Die Fledermaus", why it, in fact, is called so, they find it difficult to answer. I would like a person to know this for sure when leaving the auditorium after the performance. In my production, the central figure is Dr. Falk. Dressed in red, he appears before the viewer as a kind of evil genius - who held a grudge, made a plan for his revenge and implemented it before our eyes. He takes revenge on his former friend Eisenstein. A few years ago, heavily drunk friends returned from another masquerade: Eisenstein in a butterfly costume, and Falk in a bat costume. Eisenstein, deciding to make a joke, left his friend to sleep on a bench, where he woke up in the midst of the next day. Naturally, he had to return home across the city in a carnival costume. After that, the nickname "Dr. Bat" was attached to him. Falk did not want to forgive this to his friend and carefully hatched a plan of revenge. We will find out whether he managed to carry out his plan.

In their work, Mihiel Deikema and his colleague from Germany, costume designer Claudia Damm, tried to create an image that would be both historical and close to modern man, so men here are dressed in tailcoats, and girls in ballet tutus, costumes familiar to everyone and almost unchanged over the past century and a half. The set design of the performance is inventive and spectacular. The three spaces in which the operetta takes place – the living room, the ballroom and the prison – are variants of one room. But a special surreal effect occurs in the scene of the ball, where everything is turned upside down, and the chandelier is on the floor, and mannequins hang from the ceiling, resembling a group of bats!

Hungarian goulash cooked right in front of everyone, sparkling champagne, "Russian roulette" and dancing with ballerinas awaits you. As well as charming melodies, sharp jokes, piquant situations, eccentric actions, a dramatic turn and... happy ending.
