"The man who overcomes himself frees himself from the violence that binds all beings!" - Already a hundred years before the composition of Frau ohne Schatten, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe brought the content of this "last romantic opera", like that of its composer Richard Strauss described these words to the point. Because all the numerous characters, the dyer and the dyer Barak, the empress and the emperor, but also in certain points the demonic wet nurse, have to solve several tasks in their purification in order to recognize their counterpart anew, so that they can ultimately achieve the highest level of satisfaction in life experience family happiness. Many opera directors have failed because of the woman without a shadow, which is equipped with countless symbols and numerous parallel storylines. In a concert performance by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under their former chief conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the overwhelming composition - without stage design or costumes - was brought to the fore. Because despite all justified interpretation of the symbolism of the work, it is ultimately always the symphonic and melodic aspect that has made Die Frau ohne Schatten one of the most important operas of the 20th century. With the help of an exquisite cast of singers - a cast that even the Vienna State Opera would lick its fingers for - this performance at the Dortmund Concert Hall turned out to be an exemplary highlight in the history of the reception of Richard Strauss's work.
