About the work

The state of Pontevedro is broke, but fine society continues to party like there's no tomorrow. After all, appearances must be preserved. And there it is not reprehensible if the rich widow Hanna Glawari, who is willing to emigrate, is to be persuaded to stay through a coupling campaign - and with it her property. But the coveted lady is unusually self-determined through life. An ambiguous game of political explosiveness, paired with Franz Lehár's lively catchy tunes and rousing ballet interludes ensure that this operetta has been a success since its first performance.
