Wrapped up in the past, the widower Paul refuses to live. Its inner emptiness does not allow any sensations. Only the open confrontation with his trauma brings Paul's buried longings to an outbreak. Strange events blur the contours between reality and appearance. Paul begins to love again - but who?

The music that Erich Wolfgang Korngold found for his night piece, which staggers between madness and reality, is also captivating: with a gigantic orchestral apparatus, he unleashes a veritable intoxication of sound. The exuberant wealth of melodies and the spectacular instrumentation of the score enthralled audiences at the simultaneous world premieres in Cologne and Hamburg in 1920. "The Dead City" led the 23-year-old composer to world fame - which he was to expand as a film music composer: from 1934 Korngold was a pioneer of the still young genre in Hollywood and received two Oscars for his scores.
