he 22/23 season is all about Richard Wagner. We are pleased to bring two more parts of his "Ring des Nibelungen" to the stage this season. From September 18, 2022 you will experience "Die Walküre", the first day of the stage festival, which many consider to be the most beautiful part of the "Ring". Who is actually THE Valkyrie, you ask yourself? Director Andreas Homoki, conductor Gianandrea Noseda and soprano Camilla Nylund, who is making her role debut as Brünnhilde, give you the answers in our video series. In mythischer Vorzeit, bei Göttern, Riesen,
Nixen und Zwergen, spielt das Rheingold, der
Vorabend zu Wagners Welttheater. Mit der
Walküre scheint der Ring des Nibelungen ein
zweites Mal zu beginnen: Am ersten Tag der
Tetralogie begegnen wir mit Sieglinde, Hunding und Siegmund der Welt der Menschen.
Als er im Haus Hundings Schutz sucht, findet
Siegmund in Hundings Ehefrau Sieglinde seine
Zwillingsschwester wieder, und die beiden entbrennen in inzestuöser Liebe zueinander – einer
Liebe, die wie ein Naturereignis alle Gesetze
der Macht und der Zivilisation sprengt. Siegmund wurde einst von Gott Wotan gezeugt als
Teil eines höheren Plans, der Wotans Macht
erhalten soll. Die Geschwisterliebe war zwar
nicht Teil des Plans, wird aber von dem, der
den Plan entwarf, akzeptiert – nicht jedoch von
Fricka, seiner Frau, der Hüterin der Ehe und
der gesellschaftlichen Konventionen. In einem
grossen Streitgespräch mit Fricka muss Wotan
erkennen, dass er einem Selbstbetrug aufgesessen ist: Seine Macht kann nur ein freier Held
retten – doch Siegmund ist nicht frei, sondern
Instrument seines Plans. Wotan sieht sich gezwungen, Siegmund dem Tod preiszugeben.
Resignierend verbietet er Brünnhilde, seiner
Lieblingstochter, Siegmund im Kampf gegen
Hunding zu schützen. Die Walküre jedoch ist
von der Liebe Siegmunds zu Sieglinde so tief
ergriffen, dass sie sich dem väterlichen Befehl
widersetzt. Ihre Auflehnung bestraft der Vater
hart – umgeben von einem Feuerring muss
Brünnhilde schlafen, bis ein furchtloser Held
sie befreit. Mit dem «Walkürenritt» und dem
«Feuerzauber» avancierte die Musik der Walküre zu Wagners populärster Musik überhaupt.
Zugleich enthält sie mit Wotans Monolog über
Freiheit und Unfreiheit, über das Wahren und
Brechen von Verträgen auch das philosophische Kernstück des gesamten Rings. Nicht zuletzt ist die Walküre besonders eng mit Zürich
verbunden: Hier hat Wagner nicht nur die Musik komponiert, hier erklang 1856 im Hotel
Baur au Lac auch erstmals der erste Akt.
Generalmusikdirektor Gianandrea Noseda und
Intendant und Regisseur Andreas Homoki setzen mit der Walküre ihre Auseinandersetzung
mit dem Ring fort. Als Brünnhilde gibt Camilla Nylund, die sich als Elsa und als Eva bei den
Bayreuther Festspielen einen Namen als Wagner-Interpretin gemacht hat, ihr Rollendebüt.

In mythical antiquity, with gods, giants, mermaids and dwarfs, the Rheingold plays , the eve of Wagner's world theater. The ring of the Nibelung shines with the Valkyrieto start a second time: On the first day of the tetralogy we encounter the human world with Sieglinde, Hunding and Siegmund. When he seeks protection in Hunding's house, Siegmund finds his twin sister in Hunding's wife Sieglinde, and the two ignite in incestuous love for one another - a love that, like a natural phenomenon, breaks all the laws of power and civilization. Siegmund was once conceived by the god Wotan as part of a higher plan to preserve Wotan's power. While sibling love was not part of the plan, it is accepted by the one who designed the plan - but not by Fricka, his wife, the guardian of marriage and social conventions. In a big argument with Fricka, Wotan has to realize that he has been taken in by self-deception:Only a free hero can save his power - but Siegmund is not free, but an instrument of his plan. Wotan feels compelled to abandon Siegmund to death. Resignedly, he forbids Brünnhilde, his favorite daughter, to protect Siegmund in the fight against Hunding. The Valkyrie, however, is so deeply moved by Siegmund's love for Sieglinde that she defies her father's orders. Her father punishes her rebellion severely – surrounded by a ring of fire, Brünnhilde has to sleep until a fearless hero frees her.
