After the successes of L'Elisir d'amore and Cavalleria Rusticana, the XXI Secolo Association of Viterbo is ready for the debut of its new production: Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti on March 18 at 9pm and March 20 at 4.30pm at the Teatro dell Union for the season born from the collaboration between the Municipality of Viterbo and ATCL multidisciplinary circuit of Lazio, supported by MIC - Ministry of Culture and Lazio Region.

Under the usual direction of Maestro Fabrizio Bastianini , the participation of the EtruriÆnsemble orchestra and the vocal ensemble “ Il Contrappunto ”, directed by David Barrios and directed by Mariano Baudin .

The soloists who will alternate in the replicas scheduled at the Teatro Unione were chosen through the selections of the jury of the IX edition of the Fausto Ricci Prize , composed among others by Cecilia Gasdia and chaired by José Carreras . An ever-growing lyric award of international standing, which has proven to be an excellent springboard for future talents.

This Don Pasquale is also the prologue of OperÆtruria , the Festival which brought together, through the XXI century Association , the theaters of Viterbo, Rieti, Civitavecchia, Chiusi and Orvieto, a "lyrical circuit" which, since its debut, involves the most beautiful theaters in central Italy.

In addition to the scenes curated by Nicola Rubertelli , the costumes by Marianna Carbone and the directing assistance by Marjolaine Uscotti, the production sees the collaborations of the Francesco Orioli Institute of Viterbo, the Municipal Music School and the Santa Rosa Music High School.

The make-up and wig is by Andrea Marchi , the light designer is Luigi Della Monica .

 

The last stages of production will be hosted at the Teatro Unione, thanks to the patronage of the Municipality of Viterbo within the programming curated by Atcl .

 

It has been adequately pointed out by the most prestigious musicologists that Gaetano Donizetti's Don Pasquale represents an unprecedented example of a new style of post Rossiniana "comic opera", and is a forerunner of Offenbach, of Falstaff's Verdi, and of Gianni Schicchi's Puccini. No longer just comedy, but important and new dramaturgical elements: the individual drama of the old protagonist, no longer a deceived old Pantalone, who still hopes to be able to impregnate an attractive and very young wife; the taste of a Boulevardier theater that scandalously touches on new themes such as adultery and divorce; a new musical dramaturgy attentive to changing tastes and fashions and which in the comic genre was ready to take action with respect to a new melodrama, which, starting from the second half of the nineteenth century,

The exhibition highlights the musical and dramaturgical elements that curiously refer to a cultural humus subsequent to that of Donizetti, in particular to the belle époque-end of century climate of the works of Jacques Offenbach or Hervé.

In this perspective, the aesthetic solutions of the installation are explained more clearly: from the point of view of the scenes, created by Nicola Rubertelli, the presence of an enormous rotating "machine" is evident, revealing a double style, anchored on one side to a late nineteenth century, and on the other a clear Futurist environment, two worlds and two eras clearly distant from Time, linguistic elements of architectural styles that emphasize that dramaturgical element that runs through the story and the characters of "Don Pasquale", or the anguish of Time; and again, the beautiful costumes by Marianna Carbone in tune with this reading that wants to appear elegantly nineteenth-century for the character of Don Pasquale, or completely modern for the character of Norina who seems to have come out of the Great Gatsby; finally, the interpretation, often ironic to the point of surreal - especially for the characters of Doctor Malatesta and Notaro -, which seem to refer to a world evoked by a fantastic dissonance between My Fair Lady and D'Annunzio's aesthetics; a direction that is built on gestures and attitudes that refer to a new bourgeois society, a new melodramatic audience that was forgetting how we laughed, and how we didn't take ourselves seriously.
