Donizetti's references to Carlo Goldoni's characters from the Commedia dell'arte are unmistakable – four characters caricaturing human interaction: the aging Don Pasquale, a real Pantalone character, quirky and unmarried, puts money before everything. He would still like to have a woman by his side in the last spring of his feelings. In addition, Ernesto and Norina cannot get together due to lack of money and are dependent on the help of Pasquale's confidante Doctor Malatesta, who knits his intrigues as a source of ideas and playmaker. Turbulent ensembles and emotional outbursts are flanked on stage by a men's choir until Don Pasquale is left alone. Cured of egoism, he ridicules the evil game of the younger ones with a good face not unlike Falstaff.

Together with Giovanni Ruffini, Gaetano Donizetti worked on the libretto of Don Pasquale under great time pressure and in an at times difficult process. While the librettist referred to the heyday of opera buffa and wanted to hold on to old patterns and forms, the composer pushed for innovations and with this work completes the change from the classic musical form to a new type of buffa, the characters of which encounter each other in an extremely credible manner.

Unübersehbar sind Donizettis Referenzen an Carlo Goldonis Figuren der Commedia dell’arte – vier Figuren, die menschliches Miteinander karikieren: Dem alternden Don Pasquale, eine echte Pantalone-Figur, schrullig und unverheiratet, geht das Geld über alles. Eine Frau hätte er im letzten Frühling seiner Gefühle trotzdem gern an seiner Seite. Daneben können Ernesto und Norina aus Geldnot nicht zusammenkommen und sind auf die Hilfe von Pasquales Vertrautem Doktor Malatesta angewiesen, der als Ideengeber und Spielmacher seine Intrigen strickt. Turbulente Ensembles und Gefühlsausbrüche werden auf der Bühne von einem Herrenchor flankiert, bis Don Pasquale schließlich einsam zurückbleibt. Vom Egoismus kuriert, belächelt er Falstaff nicht unähnlich mit guter Miene das böse Spiel der Jüngeren.

Gemeinsam mit Giovanni Ruffini arbeitete Gaetano Donizetti in größter Zeitnot und in einem mitunter schwierigen Prozess am Textbuch des Don Pasquale. Während sich der Librettist auf die Glanzzeit der Opera buffa berufen und an alten Mustern und Formen festhalten wollte, drängte der Komponist nach Neuerungen und vollzieht mit diesem Werk den Wandel von der klassischen musikalischen Form zu einer neuartigen Buffa, deren Personen sich überaus glaubwürdig begegnen.
