"I already know for sure that I will tame this fool!" (Norina/Serafina)

Don Pasquale, an old, creaky bachelor finally decides to marry because he wants an heir. He would like to sire this heir with a charming wife. With this marriage he associates the desire to punish and disinherit his nephew Ernesto; for he had dared not to lead the rich woman who had been offered to him to the age of marriage; this resulted in his expulsion from Don Pasquale's house.

Don Pasquale's friend and family doctor Malatesta (also Ernesto's best friend) then spins an insidious intrigue. Now comes Norina, a pretty but poor widow and Ernesto's lover. She is commissioned to embody Malatesta's sister Sofronia and is only supposed to pretend to marry Don Pasquale. Planned, done! A false notary confirms the false marriage and Don Pasquale thinks he is already in seventh marriage heaven. Because Norina plays a nun and a pure virgin, Don Pasquale believes he is getting a thoroughly virtuous wife who will bear him many children. "Oh dear, hurry up, come on, honey! I can already see half a dozen chubby little ones being born, growing up and romping around me," he says, euphorically reveling in his intoxication.

But now the second act of the intrigue begins.

Norina/Sofronia mutates from shy girl to extravagant pet dragon! Just as it was planned. But proud Ernesto, not in on the intrigue, wants to leave the country in his pain. And he thinks his Norina is nothing more than a faithless wife because she married his uncle!

Norina/Sofronia continues to pursue the plan worked out with Malatesta: She makes Don Pasquele's life hell, throws his money out the window and slaps him hard in the face in public. Ernesto, meanwhile privy to the intrigue, meets

now hopeful and reconciled with Norina/Serafina in the garden. The cuckolded Don Pasquale overhears this and seethes with rage; now he wants to get rid of his wife!
