Il libretto è scritto da Giovanni Ruffini (anche se firmato da Michele Accursi), ed è un rifacimento del libretto scritto da Angelo Anelli nel 1810 per “Ser Marcantonio” di Stefano Pavesi. È un dramma buffo certamente, ma Don Pasquale segna un punto di arrivo e uno di rottura per l’opera buffa siglato da Donizetti; è l’approdo d’una tradizione comica italiana che percorre i secoli comunque né troppo farsesca né troppo comica, ed è l’opera nella quale la commedia si affaccia verso l’amarezza. È l’antica trama, da Donizetti articolata in tre concisi atti, del vecchio (don Pasquale), economo e celibe, raggirato con l’offerta di una sposa ingenua, la vedova invece scaltra e maliziosa che ama riamata il nipote di don Pasquale. Equivoci e travestimenti, metamorfosi, spese, finte nozze, simulati tradimenti e insulti per far sì che il vecchio maledica le sue nozze fino a che, scoperta la verità dell’architettura a suo danno, non si rassegna a benedire le nozze tra i giovani. Il libretto, nella definizione drammaturgica offerta dalla musica di Donizetti è un modello d’efficienza e di eleganza: un prontuario ben congegnato di situazioni comiche ritmate dall’intuito teatrale malizioso e attuale.

The libretto is written by Giovanni Ruffini (although it bears the name of Michele Accursi), and is a rewriting of the 1810 libretto by Angelo Anelli for “Ser Marcantonio” by Stefano Pavesi. It is undoubtedly a comic drama, but Don Pasquale marks a point of arrival and a breaking point for the comic opera written by Donizetti. It is the culmination of an Italian comic tradition which lasts through the centuries and which is neither too stuffy or too comical and is an opera in which the comedy is tinged with bitterness. It is the ancient plot, by Donizetti which has been articulated into three concise acts, with the old man (Don Pasquale), thrifty and celibate, fooled by the offer of an innocent bride, and a cunning and wicked widow who loves (and is loved by) the nephew of Don Pasquale. Misunderstandings and disguises, transformations, expenses, fake weddings, simulated betrayal and insults, all leading the old man to curse his marriage until, on discovering the truth about the plot against him, he agrees to bless the marriage between the two youngsters. The libretto, in the dramaturgic definition presented by the music of Donizetti, is a model of efficiency and elegance: a well-contrived manual of comical situations set to the rhythm of cunning and topical theatrical intuition.
