Don Quixote, whose struggle against windmills has become the image of the futility of every action, has his own method so as not to lose faith in the good and his ideals of generosity and justice. For centuries, stage dance has used the literary model of Miguel de Cervantes to stage Spanish local color and thus give a spirited form to the fascination with the exotic foreign at the time. The full-length ballet, which Marius Petipa created in 1869 to the music of Ludwig Minkus, is still one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire, among audiences and performers alike. The Staatsballett Berlin presents DON QUIXOTE in the version by Víctor Ullate.In order to escape the all too familiar clichés of superficial folklore in ballet, the Spanish choreographer and pedagogue strives for an authentic character. His refined style not only requires the concise execution of original movements, as danced in the ›Escuela Bolera‹ or come from the lived tradition of flamenco, but a special inner attitude is decisive for his reading. It challenges the sincere emotionality of the dancers: elegant seriousness and bubbling joie de vivre enrich the dance virtuosity with the energy of its original meaning, the ›parfum espagnol‹, which is very precisely defined. Víctor Ullate had Ludwig Minkus' score supplemented by music by a guitar virtuoso, which not only sounds with the orchestra, but is also played improvised in individual passages. For the first time since 2018, DON QUIXOTE will now appear on stage with complete stage design (by Roberta Guidi di Bagno) and in a new lighting concept (by Marco Filibeck). The great revival in opulent splendour is also on the programme as a new rehearsal by the choreographer with numerous changing casts at Christmas time.
