Richard Strauss gostava de partir de narrativas para estimular a sua criatividade, baseando-se com frequência em textos literários como base para a criação de imaginários orquestrais. Esse processo esteve na origem de vários dos seus poemas sinfónicos, como é o caso de Don Quixote, a partir da obra maior de Cervantes. O cavaleiro andante seria fantasiado por Strauss na “voz” de um violoncelo, enquanto o seu fiel escudeiro ganha corpo através da viola de arco. As aventuras de um dos maiores protagonistas da história da literatura ganhariam lugar numa das mais admiradas obras do compositor alemão.

Richard Strauss liked to use narratives to stimulate his creativity, often relying on literary texts as a basis for creating orchestral imagery. This process was at the origin of several of his symphonic poems, as is the case of Don Quixote , based on the major work of Cervantes. The errant knight would be fantasized by Strauss in the “voice” of a cello, while his faithful squire gains body through the viola. The adventures of one of the greatest protagonists in the history of literature would find their way into one of the most admired works by the German composer.
