After Fauré's Requiem, the Aedes Ensemble renews its collaboration with Les Siècles in the interpretation of the greatest requiem of the romantic era: the German Requiem by Brahms, under the direction of Mathieu Romano, with Axelle Fanyo (soprano) and Matthias Winckhler (baritone). The first performance took place at the Théâtre de Compiègne on May 28, 2019. Brahms - A German Requiem (about the work)

Johannes Brahms' masterpiece served by Les Siècles and the Aedes Ensemble and performed on period instruments!
Brahms took over a decade to write his German Requiem . He pays homage to his friend Robert Schumann (died in 1856) and to his mother (died in 1865). Brahms composes the libretto in German based on extracts from the Old and New Testaments. This is not a traditional Catholic mass for the dead, but funeral music in the Germanic tradition unrelated to the liturgy.

The original version is composed for more than 200 singers. Recomposed by Joachim Linckelmann for 80 performers, the work allows to restore both the original thought of Brahms contained in his first version for choir and two pianos and the orchestral texture of the work performed on period instruments.
