Join us live at the Staatsoper Hamburg as iconoclastic stage director Dmitri Tcherniakov and distinguished conductor Kent Nagano join forces once again for an electrifying new production of Richard Strauss's Elektra! Amid eye-popping sets designed by Tcherniakov himself, the characters populating this monument of Greek tragedy come to life thanks to an absolutely brilliant cast—including the legendary Violeta Urmana in the role of Clytemnestra, Aušrinė Stundytė as Elektra (a role she played to great acclaim at the 2020 Salzburg Festival), renowned tenor Lauri Vasar as Elektra's younger brother Orestes, and excellent American soprano Jennifer Holloway as Chrysothemis. Under Nagano's expert direction, the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra bring refinement and spirit to Strauss's score, which calls for an unusual lineup of wind instruments—including the heckelphone and contrabassoon!

The war is over, the tragedy begins: mother with lover murders returning father. Daughter brings brother to safety. – Day after day, Elektra commemorates her murdered father, plans bloody celebrations of victory and waits for the moment when her brother, brought up to be an avenger, will return. Under one roof with her father's murderers, a thirst for blood and revenge meets the dreams of the younger sister, who longs for marriage and children, a life of harmony and happiness. A third delusion dominates the mother: "It's not a word, it's not pain, it doesn't press me, it doesn't choke me, ... and yet it is so terrible that my soul wishes to be hanged, and every limb I cry out for death.” A sacrifice is supposed to bring salvation.
