Europeras‹ is many things rolled into one: A great spectacle that obeys the principle of chance; an immersive version of the collective operatic memory; a constant source of new and unfamiliar ways of hearing and looking at the well-known; and last but not least, a large panopticon of the opera, which is very entertaining.


The American composer John Cage, one of the most original artists of the 20th century, explained it like this: »For 200 years the Europeans sent us their operas. Now I'm sending them all back.« In his commissioned work for the Frankfurt Opera from 1987, he deals with the powerful European operatic tradition in his very own way. He creates a crossfade from countless known and unknown set pieces, which are rearranged by drawing lots. Each performance is different from previous rehearsals.


With ›play Europeras 1 & 2‹, the internationally renowned artist collective ›Rimini Protokoll‹ is developing an opera for the first time. The Berlin team of authors and directors was awarded the German Theater Prize DER FAUST, the Silver Lion at the Theater Biennale in Venice, the Mühlheimer Dramatist for its documentary theater works such as ›100% Stadt‹, ›Karl Marx: Das Kapital‹ or ›Situation Rooms‹ Prize and the German Radio Play Prize. ›play Europeras 1&2‹ continues our opera series, in which new and old music face each other. So far, ›AscheMOND or the Fairy Queen‹ and ›Surrogate Cities/Götterdämmerung‹ have been shown in the series.
