You can’t go wrong with a comedy staged by the director Ondřej Havelka, especially when it’s a comedy by Giuseppe Verdi. Perhaps you wouldn´t expect this genre from a composer of famous tragic operas, but there you would be wrong, as in actual fact Verdi wanted to write a comedy all his life, but only got round to it with his last opera. And so a masterpiece inspired by the famous Shakespearean figure, Sir John Falstaff, was created.

Falstaff, a resident of the Garter Inn, enjoys partaking of good food and drink, but is particularly interested in the local Windsor ladies Alice Ford and Meg Page. The fact that they are both married doesn´t bother him at all; on the contrary, it only adds spice to his desires. Meg and Alice don´t care for his affections, and, with the help of Mistress Quicky, entangle him in their webs and teach him a proper lesson. However, Falstaff concludes this bittersweet comedy with the wise words: “The whole world is a farce.” Verdi, who had experienced a lot himself and knew how to enjoy life, left the world a comic opera that is hard to match. Smart and witty, with occasional subtle parodies of Verdi´s typical heroic performances, full of ensemble numbers which are clearly inspired by Rossini, and with humour overflowing with understanding for all that is human, such is his Falstaff that is returning to the Brno stage after fifty years away.

Komedie a režisér Ondřej Havelka to je spojení, které nikdy nezklame. Obzvlášť, když jde o komedii od Giuseppe Verdiho. Že byste nečekali tento žánr u skladatele slavných tragických oper? Omyl, Verdi si celý život přál napsat komedii a dostal se k tomu až ve své poslední opeře. A tak vzniklo mistrovské dílo inspirované slavnou Shakespearovou postavou rytířem Falstaffem.

Sir John Falstaff, obyvatel hostince U podvazku. Má rád dobré jídlo i pití, ale především ho zajímají místní windsorské dámy Alice Ford a Meg Page. Že jsou vdané, vůbec nevadí, to naopak přidá jeho milostným výbojům na pikantnosti. Meg s Alicí ovšem o jeho přízeň nestojí, a tak roztouženého obstarožního milovníka s pomocí paní Quicky zapletou do svých sítí a dají mu pořádně za vyučenou. Falstaff ale hořkosladkou komedii uzavírá moudrými slovy: „Všechno na světě je jen fraška.“

Verdi, který sám mnohé zažil a dokázal si užít života, zanechal světu komickou operu, jíž se jen těžko něco vyrovná. Elegantní a vtipný s občasnou jemnou parodií na typické verdiovské hrdinské výstupy, plný ansámblů, které nezapřou rossiniovskou inspiraci, a s humorem naplněným porozumění pro vše lidské, takový je jeho Falstaff, kterému bude po padesáti letech opět patřit brněnské jeviště.

Eine Komödie und der Regisseur Ondřej Havelka – das ist eine Kombination, von der man nie enttäuscht wird. Vor allem, wenn es sich um eine Komödie von Giuseppe Verdi handelt. Dieses Genre hätten Sie jetzt vom Komponisten berühmter tragischer Opern gar nicht erwartet? Dann sollten Sie wissen, dass Verdi sein ganzes Leben lang den Wunsch hegte, eine Komödie zu schreiben, was ihm allerdings erst mit seiner letzten Oper gelang. Mit dieser schuf er ein Meisterwerk, das von Shakespeares berühmter Figur des Ritters Falstaff inspiriert ist.Sir John Falstaff logiert im Gasthaus zum Hosenband in Windsor. Er speist und trinkt gern und viel, vor allem jedoch interessieren ihn zwei einheimische Damen,  Alice Ford und Meg Page. Dass beide verheiratet sind, stört ihn überhaupt nicht, es macht die Liebesspiele im Gegenteil für ihn noch pikanter. Meg und Alice jedoch halten wenig von seinen Avancen, und so wollen sie denn den liebestollen älteren Herrn mit Hilfe ihrer Freundin Mrs. Quickly umgarnen, um ihm dann eine Lehre zu erteilen. Die bittersüße Komödie endet schließlich mit Falstaffs weisen Worten „Tutto nel mondo è burla.“ Verdi, der selbst vieles erlebt hatte und das Leben durchaus genießen konnte, hat der Welt eine komische Oper hinterlassen, die ihresgleichen sucht. Elegant und witzreich, bisweilen mit feinen parodistischen Anspielungen auf Verdis Heldenfiguren, mit Ensembleauftritten, die die Inspiration durch Rossini nicht verleugnen, und mit einem Humor voller innigem Verständnis für die menschlichen Abgründe – das ist sein Falstaff, der nunmehr nach fünfzig Jahren wieder auf der Brünner Bühne zu erleben sein wird.
