Verdi is convinced that Othello is his latest opera. But in November 1890, when the composer had reached the age of 77, he became acquainted with Arigo Boyto's libretto, Falstaff, based on Shakespeare's Comedy The Merry Windsors. Verdi liked the libretto very much and immediately agreed to write an opera on it.

The composer has always wanted to work on Shakespeare's plots, but it was very difficult to decide. Verdi was well acquainted with the work of the great English playwright and more than once considered "The Merry Windsors" as the basis for comic opera. For many years he dreamed of writing a comic opera. And he managed to realize this dream at the age of almost 80.

Othello took him more than five years, and Falstaff he completed in less than two years. The premiere was on February 9, 1893 at the Scala Theater in Milan and was a great success. At this performance there is an impromptu celebration of the 80-year-old master artist. After the removal of Falstaff, they want to award him the title of Marquis Busseto, but Verdi flatly refuses.

There are no major or minor roles in Falstaff: they are all as important, as difficult and as difficult as in life. The libretto of the opera is based on Shakespeare's brilliant comedy "The Merry Windsors".
In the end, Verdi laughs at Falstaff, but in fact, he laughs at himself. His humor is unique, but his love for the character, although ridiculed, is huge and priceless. He turns the main character into a universe where we swim, sink, save ourselves and solve problems by laughing. In fact, Verdi shows that he has mercy on Falstaff, on us, and on the whole world, with gratitude for a priceless, wonderful life.

The composer himself describes his new opera as a "lyrical comedy". This corresponds to two dramaturgical lines of action that skillfully intertwine - the romantic-love story between the youngest Nanetta and Fenton and the comic-ironic line of the story around the colorful image of the nobleman Sir John Falstaff. And all this - in the wonderful traditions of the Italian commedia del arte!
