How do you feel about religion?" the naive Gretchen asks the scientist Faust in Goethe's tragedy. The librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré did not transfer this famous question into the text of the opera, however, for the composer, religious issues remained one of the main ones. Charles Gounod was not just an ordinary parishioner - he worked as a church musician for several years and even intended to become a priest. The stunning organ music and chorales in the opera Faust were written by a former church organist and choir director, for whom God and the devil are by no means abstractions. While staging Faust at the Mariinsky Theatre, the British artist and director Isabella Bywater recalled her own religious experience, she was “interesting to watch a believer who does things that are displeasing to God.” As a representative of the liberal XXI century, Baywater does not consider the horned and the tailed to be a separate entity: in her Mephistopheles, like a devil from a snuffbox, is "born" directly from Faust's bed and merged with him into an indivisible tandem. Not the "father of lies", but man does evil and must answer for it. In the dark depths of the human soul, monsters swarm (they are embodied on the stage by the silent figures of helpful demons), and everyone must curb them himself.

The tragic love story of Faust and Margarita in the Mariinsky production is moved to the beginning of the 20th century, but the director makes it clear that it is one of those that are repeated over and over again. The heroes wander among the tombstones, on which their own names and dates belonging to different centuries are read. In the context of modern morality, when the former concepts of honor and dishonor, guilt and innocence are largely rethought, Bywater shows the sinfulness of Faust, comparing him with Nabokov's Humbert, and Marguerite with Lolita. The heroine of the opera is fourteen, her seducer is an old man who has returned only physical youth. For Faust, his beloved at first is also just a "nymphet" Gretchen, one of the many schoolgirls with a briefcase, a flower that you want to pluck irresistibly. Plucked, this flower turns out to be unnecessary for any man: neither a lover, nor a brother.

The gothic severity of the stage solution does not prevent Faust from being a luxurious romantic performance - thanks to Gounod. The simpler the gestures on the stage, the more expressive the orchestra sounds, conveying the fullness of the characters' feelings: from tenderness to frenzy, from despair to ecstasy. The opera is replete with magnificent melodies, many of which have become hits in concert programs: Mephistopheles' verses about the golden calf, Margaret's ballad about the king of Fula, Faust's aria "Hail to you, innocent shelter", march of soldiers, waltz ... Margaret's tragic death in the finale is experienced not as a triumph of death but as a celebration of love. Margarita is saved because she loved, and ascends to God as to love. Шарль Гуно был не просто рядовым прихожанином – он несколько лет работал церковным музыкантом и даже намеревался стать священником. Потрясающую органную музыку и хоралы в опере «Фауст» написал бывший церковный органист и регент, для которого Бог и дьявол отнюдь не абстракции. Ставя «Фауста» в Мариинском театре, британская художница и режиссер Изабелла Байвотер вспоминала собственный религиозный опыт, ей было «интересно наблюдать за верующим человеком, который совершает неугодные Богу поступки». Как представитель либерального XXI века, Байвотер не считает рогатого и хвостатого отдельной сущностью: у нее Мефистофель, как черт из табакерки, «рождается» прямо из постели Фауста и слит с ним в неделимый тандем. Не «отец лжи», а человек творит зло и должен за него отвечать. В темных глубинах человеческой души копошатся чудовища (на сцене их воплощают безмолвные фигуры услужливых демонов), и обуздывать их каждый должен сам.

Трагическая история любви Фауста и Маргариты в мариинской постановке перенесена в начало XX века, но режиссер дает понять: она из тех, что повторяются снова и снова. Герои бродят среди могильных плит, на которых читаются их собственные имена и даты, принадлежащие разным векам. В контексте современной морали, когда прежние понятия чести и бесчестия, вины и невинности во многом переосмыслены, Байвотер показывает греховность Фауста, сравнивая его с набоковским Гумбертом, а Маргариту – с Лолитой. Героине оперы – четырнадцать, ее соблазнитель – старик, который вернул лишь физическую молодость. Для Фауста его возлюбленная поначалу тоже просто «нимфетка» Гретхен, одна из множества школьниц с портфелем, цветок, который неудержимо хочется сорвать. Сорванный, этот цветок оказывается ненужным никакому мужчине: ни любовнику, ни брату. Чтобы ярче обозначить эту мысль, Байвотер сделала единственного сочувствующего Маргарите героя мужского пола – Зибеля – девушкой.

Готическая суровость сценического решения не мешает «Фаусту» быть роскошным романтическим спектаклем – благодаря Гуно. Чем проще жесты на сцене, тем выразительнее звучит оркестр, передающий всю полноту чувств героев: от нежности до исступления, от отчаяния до экстаза. Опера переполнена великолепными мелодиями, многие из которых стали хитами концертных программ: куплеты Мефистофеля о золотом тельце, баллада Маргариты о фульском короле, ария Фауста «Привет тебе, приют невинный», марш солдат, вальс… Трагическая гибель Маргариты в финале переживается не как торжество смерти, а как торжество любви. Маргарита спасена потому, что любила, и возносится к Богу как к любви. Убедительнее всего об этом говорит музыка. Христина Батюшина
