The story of Faust, the wise old man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for his youth, immortalized mainly by Goethe, inspired an unusual number of composers. In the chapter of the opera, the most famous title it is based on the Faust of Frenchman Charles Gounod.

Shortly after its premiere at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on March 19, 1859, this opera took the sensibility of the second half of the 19th century by storm. After the first performance at the Opéra , in 1869, it has become to this day the most sung title in the history of that theater. It was also chosen to open the Met in New York in 1883.

Faust's tremendous popularity has outpaced the music, as evidenced by Bianca Castafiore, who tirelessly sings the aria from Act III «Ah! Je ris de me voir si belle …» in the adventures of «Tintin». It wasn't just Hergé, however, who fell in love. Eça de Queiroz referred to the opera repeatedly, even describing, in the novel O Primo Basílio , a performance of the same performed in our theatre. A proof that the title was very popular in São Carlos. Earlier, in the 1867 Mephistopheles chronicle , Eça had shown interest in Gounod's opera.

The cast of this production will be led by two soloists with careers on the main world stages: the South Korean Mario Bahg and the Russian soprano Irina Lungu.
