Faust is an aging scholar who regrets that studies kept him from experiencing so many of life’s pleasures, especially love. In a moment of weakness, he calls out to the powers of darkness and the devil appears. He transforms Faust into a young man, and promises him the love of the beautiful Marguerite. Everything goes as the devil promises, but Faust’s taste for excitement means Marguerite is left behind, disgraced. The devil preys on her desperation, pushing her to the brink, building to one of the most extraordinary finales in all of opera.
