Fausto, a semi-seria opera in four acts, first staged at the Théâtre-Italien (Salle Favart) in Paris on 7 March 1831, marks the convergence of two extremely rare situations in operas of the Romantic period: it is the work of a woman and (although Italian in language, style and genre) it was composed by a French woman. Two years after the publication of Berlioz’s Huit Scènes de Faust, Louise Bertin in turn drew inspiration from Goethe’s play and demonstrated the modernity of her aesthetic ambitions. Although it received only three performances, today her Fausto deserves a second hearing. Although it was first performed with a tenor (Domenico Donzelli) in the title role, the Palazzetto Bru Zane has chosen to première the original version of this opera, the manuscript of which reveals that the role of Faust was intended to be sung by a woman: a première commensurate with the talent of Karine Deshayes!

Fausto, opera semi-seria en quatre actes, créé au Théâtre-Italien de Paris en 1831, combine deux situations d’une grande rareté dans le paysage lyrique romantique. Il est l’œuvre d’une femme et, bien qu’ouvrage italien par sa langue, son style et son genre, il a été composé par une Française. Deux ans après la publication des Huit Scènes de Faust d’Hector Berlioz, Louise Bertin s’inspire à son tour de la pièce de Goethe et démontre la modernité de ses ambitions esthétiques. Déprogrammé après seulement trois représentations, Fausto mérite aujourd’hui une deuxième chance de s’exprimer. Alors qu’il a été créé avec un ténor dans le rôle-titre (Domenico Donzelli), le Palazzetto Bru Zane a choisi de proposer la création de la version initiale de cet opéra, dont le manuscrit révèle qu’il a été pensé pour une femme travestie : une première à la mesure du talent de Karine Deshayes.

Fausto presenta due caratteristiche assai rare nel panorama lirico romantico: è stata composta da una donna, e per giunta da una donna francese, pur essendo un’opera italiana quanto a lingua, stile e genere. Due anni dopo la pubblicazione delle Huit Scènes de Faust di Hector Berlioz, Louise Bertin si ispira a sua volta alla pièce di Goethe e dà prova della modernità delle proprie ambizioni estetiche. Tolto dal cartellone dopo tre sole rappresentazioni, Fausto merita di ricevere oggi una seconda possibilità. Alla prima il ruolo eponimo era stato interpretato da un tenore (Domenico Donzelli), ma il Palazzetto Bru Zane ha scelto di proporre la versione iniziale attestata dal manoscritto, in cui il ruolo di Fausto è affidato a una donna en travesti: una première all’altezza del talento di Karine Deshayes.
