In 1889, Umberto Giordano saw a performance of Fédora by the French playwright Victorien Sardou (1831-1908) at the Teatro Bellini in Naples. The famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) played the title role. Giordano was so fascinated by her evocative acting that he immediately asked Sardou for permission to rework the play into an operatic libretto. At the time, however, Giordano was a relatively unknown author, and Sardou immediately rejected his request. The playwright's intransigence was broken only seven years later, when Giordano's most famous work to this day, Andrea Chénier's four-act opera based on a theme from the time of the Great French Revolution, was performed for the first time in La Scala in Milan - and it must be said with great success.

The opera Fedora had its world premiere on November 17, 1898 at Milan's Teatro Lirico Internationale. Gemma Bellincioni performed the title role, the role of Loris Ipanov was created by the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso, who at that time was only on the threshold of a truly world-class career. The opera was a great success and spread around the world - it was soon performed under the baton of Gustav Mahler in Vienna and also shone in Paris, where its admirers included, for example, Jules Massenet (1842-1912) or Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921). At the end of 1906 Fedora was also heard for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with Lina Cavalieri in the title role and again with Enrico Caruso in the role of Loris. In the first half of the twentieth century, the work was regularly performed in a number of opera houses, but later it became more and more difficult to establish itself, and it can be said that that in the end it appeared rather sporadically in the context of world opera production. The change came at the beginning of the nineties, when Fedora experienced a real "rebirth" around the world thanks to great performers - for example, Mirella Freni, Katia Ricciarelli, Renata Scotto, Agnes Baltsa and Maria Guleghina shone in the role of Fedora; in the role of Loris, for example Plácido Domingo, José Carreras or José Cura charmed the audience.

The opera is staged as a retrospective. We arrive at the end of the 19th century in Russia, among the aristocratic society with the elegant, witty and rich widow Fedora, a time full of contradictions. Which is characterized by luxury and superficial sensibility, but also by the height of tsarist absolutism, full of police interventions, imprisonment and executions.

Umberto Giordano zhlédl v roce 1889 v neapolském Teatro Bellini představení hry Fédora od francouzského dramatika Victoriena Sardoua (1831-1908). V titulní roli vystoupila slavná francouzská herečka Sarah Bernhardtová (1844-1923). Giordano byl natolik fascinován jejím sugestivním herectvím, že okamžitě požádal Sardoua o svolení k přepracování hry v operní libreto. V té době byl ale Giordano poměrně neznámým autorem a Sardou jeho žádost okamžitě zamítl. Dramatikovu neoblomnost se podařilo zlomit až o sedm let později, kdy v milánské La Scale poprvé – a nutno říci, že s obrovským úspěchem – zaznělo Giordanovo dodnes nejslavnější dílo, čtyřaktová opera na námět z doby Velké francouzské revoluce Andrea Chénier.

Operní Fedora měla světovou premiéru 17. listopadu 1898 v milánském Teatro Lirico Internationale. V titulní roli vystoupila Gemma Bellincioni, roli Lorise Ipanova vytvořil legendární tenorista Enrico Caruso, který ale v té době teprve stál na prahu vpravdě světové kariéry. Opera zaznamenala velký úspěch a rozletěla se do světa – záhy byla uvedena pod taktovkou Gustava Mahlera ve Vídni a zazářila také v Paříži, kde mezi její obdivovatele patřili například Jules Massenet (1842-1912) nebo Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921). Na konci roku 1906 Fedora poprvé zazněla také v Metropolitní opeře v New Yorku s Linou Cavalieri v titulní roli a opět s Enricem Carusem v roli Lorise. V první polovině dvacátého století bylo dílo pravidelně uváděno v řadě operních domech, později se ale prosazovalo čím dál tím složitěji a dá se říci, že se nakonec v kontextu světové operní produkce objevovalo spíše sporadicky. Změna nastala počátkem devadesátých let, kdy Fedora zažila opravdové „znovuzrození“ po celém světě díky skvělým interpretům – v roli Fedory zářily například Mirella Freni, Katia Ricciarelli, Renata Scotto, Agnes Baltsa a Maria Guleghina; v roli Lorise okouzlovali publikum například Plácido Domingo, José Carreras nebo José Cura.

Inscenačně je opera pojata jako retrospekce. Dostáváme se na konec 19. století do Ruska, mezi aristokratickou společnost s elegantní, vtipnou a bohatou vdovou Fedorou, do doby plné rozporů. Která se vyznačuje přepychem a povrchní citovostí, ale také vrcholícím carským absolutismem, plným policejních zásahů, uvězňování a poprav.
