About the work

Fête Galante By Poul Schierbeck - Guest performance by The Danish National Opera (Den Jyske Opera) The Danish National Opera presents Fête galante, the third pearl in its string of rare operas written by famous Danish composers. Fête galante is performed in Danish with Danish surtitles. Fêtes galantes, which were rural festivals celebrating love, were a popular form of entertainment among the nobility in the early 1700s. Often, the guests attended wanton parties dressed up in masks. In Schierbeck’s supreme masterpiece of the same name, another celebration of love, a wedding, runs riot when reality dawns on the young Count René with his unfettered lust. The Count decides to seduce an unsuspecting girl name Suzon and stages a fake wedding to dupe her. Suzon loves René and has no idea that the wedding is a sham. The impoverished theatre director Scaramouche discovers the Count’s deception and chooses to exploit the situation by blackmailing the Count, who has meanwhilefallen in love with Suzon. From here on, the intricacies accelerate with equal helpings of comedy and eroticism, until the play culminates in a festival of love in Schierbeck’s sole major dramatico-musical work. Behind the scenes, you will find a Danish team featuring conductor Christian Øland and award-winning stage director Jakob Schjødt in his first production for the Danish National Opera.
