It is a musical whose music is full of temperamental passions. In it, the listener recognizes elements of stylized Jewish folklore, old Russian romances, and next to them sound typical modern themes with their characteristic rhythm, melody and harmony. Many of the musical’s numbers have become universally acclaimed hits. These include the prologue theme "Tradition" and Tevje's song "If I Were Rich", as well as the song "The Sun Is Flowing, the Sun Is Setting" and others performed by all the characters. American composer J. Bock, librettist J. Stein, and songwriter S. Harnickas in 1964. The musical "Violinist on the Roof", as well as the famous musicals "My Great Lady", "Hello, Doli", "West Side Story" or "Sounds of Music", belong to the gold fund of this genre. When in 1958 J. Bock and S. Harnick debuted as co-authors, they had both already achieved this. And although the duo's first work, the musical "Beauty Contest", was not a success, it drew the attention of the artistic community to a talented ensemble of creators. A year later, great success came: the musical "Fiorel". In it, the authors narrated Fiorello La Guardia, one of the most popular politicians of the time, through music, poetry and dance, from 1933 to 1945. a biography of a New York mayor. The music and lyrics caused a furore, especially the satirical episodes of the piece. This stage work has earned the highest recognition and various awards for authors, builders and performers. After two more unsuccessful musicals (Lepūnėlis and She Loves Me), the tandem took on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, a classic of Jewish literature, about the life of a dairy farmer, Tevje, and his family in a small town in tsarist Russia. already in the air in 1905. a sense of revolution.



The premiere of "The Violinist on the Roof" took place in 1964. in September. One of the brightest and most innovative performances of musical theater with a very strong charge of humanistic ideas, understood by audiences all over the world, regardless of race and nationality, was born. The success of the lyrical, humorous performance was largely determined by the mastery of director Jerome Robbins. This performance has won many prestigious awards for its co-authors and brought them world fame. The famous Zero Mostel played the role of Tevje in the first production of the Broadway Theater, and his wife Goldė was played by dancer Marija Karnilova. The lucky creators decided to take up the Jewish theme again and lost this time. 1970 The musical Rothschild depicted the famous Rothschild family of bankers in 1772-1818. However, the authors failed to climb the factories illustrated with the songs. "Rothschilds" lacked a surreal violinist on the roof… "Violinist on the Roof" surpassed all success records with a fantastic number of productions on Broadway: it has been shown 3242 times in nine years! After the premiere, it was staged in 32 more countries, and the heroes of the musical spoke 16 different languages ​​on stage. The musical creates a striking coloring of Jewish life in a small village. The leitmotif of "The Violinist on the Roof" is a tradition. It is very important for the main character of the musical - the dairy farmer Tevje. However, old customs do not withstand confrontation with the younger generation who look at the world differently… and the heroes of the musical spoke 16 different languages ​​on stage.
