“Violinist on the roof… somewhere we are all. We try to elicit a clean tune while balancing so as not to break our necks. Not easy!"

The site is Anatevka, a village inhabited by Jews and Russians in the 20th century, where community life is defined by religion and all-encompassing traditions. Here lives Tevje, the milkman's wife, Golde, and their five daughters. The father does everything he can to keep the daughters married according to tradition. However, young people want to marry out of love instead of religious ideas, so the eldest girl, Cejtel, chooses the poor tailor, Mótel, instead of her rich husband; his sister, Hodel, travels to Siberia after his imprisoned lover, Perchik; And Hava, the third girl, finds happiness next to a boy of a different religion. Meanwhile, the local Jewish community is facing various ordeals: growing anti-Semitism, political upheavals and, finally, the decree,

The play was first performed in Hungary at the Operetta Theater on February 9, 1973, directed by László Vámos, starring Ferenc Bessenyei. It is a very important work that forms a kind of transition between the genre of operetta and musical, appealing to the audience with its special musical world and bitter sweet humor. The play was banned in 1974 and was re-performed in 1985, eleven years later, also at the Operetta Theater.

In 2021, directed by Yvette Bozsik, with the participation of all the artists of the theater, she will return to our repertoire!
