The festival programme also offers interesting contexts and contrasts with Janáček´s works. This time, it is the turn of the ensemble of the National Theatre Opera in Prague to present a true feat of theatre at the end of the festival – a new production of Erwin Schulhoff´s opera Flames, directed by Calixto Bieito. This work on the theme of Don Juan was offered to the composer by Janáček’s friend of many years, Max Brod, and its world premiere took place in Brno at today´s Mahen Theatre in 1932.

Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942) came from a Prague Jewish family of German origin. After studying at the Prague Conservatory, which he started at the age of ten, he continued in Vienna, Leipzig (composition with Max Reger) and Cologne. The beginning of the First World War interrupted the promising start of his artistic career. Schulhoff spent the war as a soldier on the Eastern Front, an experience which shaped his opinions on art. After the war, he worked as an excellent pianist in European centres of music. His interest in jazz and Igor Stravinsky´s work arose during this period. Just like Stravinsky, Schulhoff began to combine impressionist, expressionist and neoclassical techniques. The author of the work recommended to him by M. Brod was the Czech writer Karel Josef Beneš, who later achieved international success as the author of the psychological novels Stolen Life and The Magic House. His treatment of the Don Juan legend was unconventional, and it was interesting for Schulhoff, who liked to experiment. Apart from the story of Don Juan, the surrealist theme contains elements from the legend of the Eternal Jew and is influenced by Freud´s psychoanalysis. 

The piece lies on the boundary between opera, pantomime and symphonic poem, and is more a series of ten loosely connected scenes than an opera. Don Juan is in love with Death, who is personified by the character of La Morte, the only woman he has never been able to seduce. He doesn’t go to hell for his actions, unlike Mozart´s Don Giovanni, but is doomed to forever live one part of his life over and over in a constantly recurring cycle in which he enters the dark house where the opera started, accompanied by the sound of a flute solo, to seduce yet another victim. This is observed from afar by six Shadows – women commenting on the plot and on Juan´s life like a Greek chorus. 

The opera ends with the words of La Morte: Salvation is so distant – once again. At the time when the opera was created, neither Schulhoff nor Beneš knew that their fates would be similar: Beneš was sentenced to death for his participation in the anti-Nazi resistance, though the sentence was changed to imprisonment (1941-1945), while Schulhoff did not live to see the end of the war: as a Jewish artist, he was deported to the Wülzburg concentration camp in Bavaria, where he died of tuberculosis in August 1942. 

Schulhoff´s Flames approaches the form of the opera genre in a unique way, and with its damnation of Don Juan through eternal life provides a parallel to Janáček´s The Makropulos Case.

Festivalový program rovněž nabízí zajímavé kontexty a protiklady k Janáčkovým dílům. Tentokrát to bude soubor Opery Národního divadla v Praze, který na závěr festivalu představí skutečně dramaturgický počin – novou inscenaci opery Erwina Schulhoffa Plameny v režii Calixta Bieita. Ty měly světovou premiéru právě v Brně v dnešním Mahenově divadle roku 1932 a skladateli donjuanovské téma nabídl Janáčkův dlouholetý přítel Max Brod. 

Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942) pocházel z pražské židovské rodiny německého původu. Po studiu na pražské konzervatoři, které započal již v deseti letech, pokračoval ve Vídni, v Lipsku (skladba u Maxe Regera) a v Kolíně nad Rýnem. Slibný rozjezd jeho umělecké kariéry přerušil začátek 1. světové války. Schulhoff ji strávil jako voják na východní frontě a tento pobyt formoval jeho názory na umění. Po skončení války jako vynikající klavírista působil v evropských hudebních centrech. Z té doby pochází jeho zaujetí jazzem i tvorbou Igora Stravinského. Stejně jako on začal ve své tvorbě kombinovat impresionistické, expresionistické i neoklasicistní postupy. Autorem díla doporučeného M. Brodem byl český literát Karel Josef Beneš, který později dosáhl mezinárodních úspěchů jako autor psychologických románů Uloupený život a Kouzelný dům. Jeho zpracování donjuanovské legendy bylo netradiční a Schulhoffa, který rád experimentoval, zaujalo. Surrealistický námět kromě příběhu Dona Juana obsahuje prvky z legendy o Věčném Židovi a je ovlivněn Freudovou psychoanalýzou. 

Opera na rozhraní opery, pantomimy a symfonické básně je spíše řadou deseti volně spojených scén. Don Juan je zamilován do Smrti personifikované postavou La Morte, jediné ženy, kterou nikdy nedokázal svést. Za své činy nepropadne peklu jako Mozartův Don Giovanni, ale je odsouzen k neustále se opakujícímu cyklu svého života – vstupu do setmělého domu, kde opera začala, za zvuku flétnového sóla, aby svedl další oběť. To zpovzdálí sleduje šest Stínů – žen komentujících jako řecký chorus dění na jevišti i Juanův život. Operu uzavírají slova La Morte: Spása je tak vzdálena – opět. V době vzniku opery Schulhoff ani Beneš netušili, že je čeká podobný životní osud: Beneš byl za účast v protinacistickém odboji odsouzen k trestu smrti, který byl změněn na vězení (1941–1945), Schulhoff se konce války nedožil; jako židovský umělec byl deportován do koncentračního tábora Wülzburg v Bavorsku, kde v srpnu 1942 zemřel na tuberkulózu.

Schulhoffovy Plameny jsou jedinečným uchopením podoby operního žánru a svým vyzněním zatracení Dona Juana prostřednictvím věčného života tvoří paralelu k Janáčkově Věci Makropulos.

Das Festivalprogramm bietet auch interessante Kontexte und Kontraste zu Janáčeks Werken. Diesmal wird das Opernensemble des Nationaltheaters Prag zum Abschluss des Festivals eine wirkliche dramaturgische Großtat präsentieren – eine Neuinszenierung von Erwin Schulhoffs Oper Flammen unter der Regie von Calixto Bieito. Diese Oper hatte ihre Uraufführung 1932 gerade im heutigen Mahen-Theater in Brno, und auf das Don-Juan-Thema brachte den Komponisten Janáčeks langjähriger Freund Max Brod. 

Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942) stammte aus einer Prager jüdischen Familie deutscher Herkunft. Nach seiner Ausbildung am Prager Konservatorium, die er bereits mit zehn Jahren begann, studierte er in Wien, Leipzig (Komposition bei Max Reger) und in Köln. Den vielversprechenden Auftakt seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn unterbrach der Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs. Schulhoff verbrachte den Krieg als Soldat an der Ostfront, was seinen Blick auf die Kunst dauerhaft formen sollte. Nach dem Ende des Krieges wirkte er als herausragender Pianist in den Zentren der europäischen Musikszene. In jener Zeit entwickelte sich seine Begeisterung für den Jazz wie auch für das Werk Igor Strawinskys. Wie jener begann auch Schulhoff in seinem Schaffen impressionistische, expressionistische und auch neoklassische Verfahren zu kombinieren. Autor der Vorlage, welche Max Brod dem Komponisten empfohlen hatte, war der tschechische Schriftsteller Karel Josef Beneš, der später als Verfasser der psychologischen Romane Das geraubte Leben und Das Zauberhaus zu internationalem Erfolg gelangen sollte. Seine Verarbeitung der Don-Juan-Legende war unkonventionell und fand das Gefallen des experimentierfreudigen Schulhoff. Die surrealistische Handlung enthält neben der Geschichte des Don Juan auch Elemente der Sage vom Ewigen Juden und ist durch Freuds Psychoanalyse beeinflusst. 

Das Werk an der Grenzlinie von Oper, Pantomime und symphonischer Dichtung ist eine Aneinanderreihung von zehn lose miteinander verbundenen Szenen. Don Juan ist verliebt in den Tod, personifiziert in der Figur der La Morte, der einzigen Frau, die er noch nie verführen konnte. Für seine Taten fällt er nicht wie Mozarts Don Giovanni der Hölle anheim, sondern wird zur unendlichen Wiederholung seines Lebens verurteilt – unter den Klängen eines Flötensolos jenes verdunkelte Haus zu betreten, in dem die Oper begonnen hat, um dort das nächste Opfer zu verführen. Dies wird aus der Ferne von den sechs Schatten beobachtet – Frauen, die wie ein griechischer Chorus das Geschehen auf der Bühne und auch Don Juans Leben kommentieren. Die Oper findet ihren Abschluss mit den Worten der La Morte: Die Rettung ist so fern – wieder einmal. Zum Zeitpunkt der Entstehung der Oper konnte weder Schulhoff noch Beneš ahnen, dass ihnen ein ähnliches Schicksal widerfahren würde: Beneš wurde für seine Widerstandstätigkeit gegen die Nationalsozialisten zum Tode verurteilt. Die Todesstrafe wurde in eine Haftstrafe umgewandelt (1941–1945), und er überlebte den Krieg. Schulhoff dagegen erlebte das Kriegsende nicht mehr; als jüdischer Künstler wurde er in das Internierungslager auf der Wülzburg in Bayern verschleppt, wo er im August 1942 an Tuberkulose starb.

Schulhoffs Flammen stellen eine ganz einzigartige Herangehensweise an das Operngenre dar, das Motiv der Verdammung Don Juans zu einem ewigen Leben zeigt Parallelen zu Janáčeks Sache Makropulos.

Le programme du festival offre également des contextes et des contrastes intéressants aux œuvres de Janáček. Cette fois, c’est l’ensemble du Théâtre national de Prague qui présentera une véritable prouesse dramaturgique à la fin du festival – une nouvelle production de l’opéra Les Flammes d’Erwin Schulhoff mise en scène par Calixt Bieit. La première mondiale a eu lieu à Brno, dans l’actuel théâtre Mahen, en 1932. C’était Max Brod, ami de longue date de Janáček, qui a offert le thème de Don Juan au compositeur.

Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) est issu d’une famille juive pragoise d’origine allemande. Après des études au conservatoire de Prague, qu’il commence à l’âge de dix ans, il poursuit ses études à Vienne, Leipzig (la composition avec Max Reger) et Cologne. Le début prometteur de sa carrière artistique est interrompu par le début de la Première guerre mondiale. Schulhoff  l’a passé comme soldat sur le front de l’Est, et ce séjour a influencé sa vision de l’art. Après la guerre, il a travaillé dans des centres musicaux européens, étant un pianiste excellent. Sa fascination pour le jazz et l’œuvre d’Igor Stravinsky date de cette époque. Comme lui, il commence à combiner dans son travail des approches impressionnistes, expressionnistes et néoclassiques. L’auteur de l’œuvre recommandée par M. Brod était l’écrivain tchèque Karel Josef Beneš, qui a ensuite connu un succès international en tant qu’auteur des romans psychologiques Uloupený život et Kouzelný dům. Son traitement de la légende de Don Juan n’est pas conventionnel et Schulhoff, qui aime expérimenter, est intrigué. Outre l’histoire de Don Juan, le thème surréaliste contient des éléments de la légende du Juif éternel et est influencé par la psychanalyse freudienne.

L’opéra qui combine l’opéra, la pantomime et le poème symphonique est plutôt une série de dix scènes vaguement reliées entre elles. Don Juan est amoureux de la Mort, incarnée par la figure de La Morte, la seule femme qu’il n’a jamais réussi à séduire. Pour son comportement, il ne va pas en enfer comme le Don Giovanni de Mozart, mais est condamné au cycle sans cesse répété de sa vie – entrer dans une maison sombre où l’opéra a commencé, au son d’un solo de flûte, pour séduire la prochaine victime. Six ombres, les femmes qui commentent comme un chœur grec les événements de la scène et la vie de Juan, les observent de loin. L’opéra se termine par les paroles de La Morte : Le salut est si loin – encore une fois. À l’époque de la composition de l’opéra, ni Schulhoff ni Beneš ne savaient qu’ils connaîtraient un sort similaire dans leur vie : Beneš a été condamné à mort pour sa participation à la résistance antinazie, peine commuée en prison (1941-1945) ; Schulhoff n’a pas vécu pour voir la fin de la guerre ; en tant qu’artiste juif, il a été déporté au camp de concentration de Wülzburg, en Bavière, où il est mort de tuberculose en août 1942.

Les Flammes de Schulhoff est une prise unique sur la forme du genre d’opéra, et son message sur la damnation de Don Juan par la vie éternelle forme un parallèle avec L’Affaire Makropoulos de Janáček.
