Chamber music will be performed in the new format of the Inverted Concerto, which started at the last festival and will continue its development this season. Both the musicians and the audience sit on the stage, which creates a completely unique sound experience. The listener is inside the sound wave and at the same time surrounded by the empty resonating space of the auditorium.
The concerto is entitled "For the End of Time" after the name of Olivier Messiaen's quartet - this composition will open the evening. The End of Time Quartet was created under incredible conditions: during World War II, the composer was held captive in the Stalag VIII-A camp (Görlitz, Germany, now in Poland). Other musicians were with him - a clarinetist, a violinist and a cellist. It was for these instruments, as well as for the piano, which the composer himself played, that the quartet was composed. He sounded in the camp before the prisoners on January 15, 1941. This is an amazing monument of both music and history of the 20th century.
The host of the concert Yaroslav Timofeev: “Everything that will sound in the program can be called winter music. Of course, this means not only the calendar winter, but also the winter of human life. This is music inspired by reflections on death. Adams took Beethoven's last, farewell sonatas as a basis. Bruckner wrote the Seventh Symphony, first intuitively, and then consciously saying goodbye to his idol Wagner. Messiaen generally created the quartet under exceptional conditions, in which he did not know whether he would be alive tomorrow. The dying composition of Zimmerman, who passed away of his own free will, is a listening into the ensuing silence.
It seemed to me that the name of the concert “For the End of Time”, which was born from the title of the messianic quartet, would be the best epigraph for the whole evening. The meaning of this name shimmers with different facets. Obviously, its significance associated with the Apocalypse: Messiaen himself turned to the image of the Last Judgment, he knew the Bible perfectly. But we can also recall Goethe's Faust, who wanted to stop the moment for completely different reasons, and, of course, Vladimir Martynov's textbook book "The End of Composers' Time". Since the concert will feature scores created over the past century and a half, we will look back at the path traveled by music and people, and reflect on whether the end is near or there will still be time.”
