Meet the Merovingians, kings of the Franks of the High Middle Ages with disproportionate ambition. A fratricidal struggle pits Brunhilda against her brother-in-law Hilpéric, his wife Frédégonde and their son Mérowig (also called Mérovée, he will give his name to the Merovingian dynasty). In this grim tale of thwarted succession, the reigning Frankish dynasty is torn apart around the remnants of the kingdom of Clovis, as Merowig unexpectedly sits alongside the bewitching Brunhilda, thirsty for revenge. The tropism of murderous queens is explored with passion and violence in Frédégonde's score, sketched by Ernest Guiraud and completed by Saint-Saëns on the death of his friend.
The Opéra de Tours offers the work in concert version under the direction of Laurent Campellone, with Kate Aldrich and Angélique Boudeville in the role of rival sovereigns.

Faites la connaissance des Mérovingiens, rois des Francs du Haut Moyen-Âge à l'ambition démesurée. Une lutte fratricide oppose Brunhilda à son beau-frère Hilpéric, son épouse Frédégonde et leur fils Mérowig (appe­lé aussi Mérovée, il donnera son nom à la dynastie des Mérovingiens). Dans cette sombre histoire de succession contrariée, la dynastie régnante des Francs se déchire au­tour des restes du royaume de Clovis, alors que Mérowig se range contre toute attente aux côtés de l'envoûtante Brunhilda, assoiffée de vengeance. Le tropisme des reines meurtrières est exploré avec passion et violence dans la partition de Frédégonde, esquissée par Ernest Guiraud et terminée par Saint-Saëns à la mort de son ami.
L'Opéra de Tours propose l'œuvre en version de concert sous la direction de Laurent Campellone, avec Kate Aldrich et Angélique Boudeville dans le rôle des souveraines rivales.
