The rebirth of an almost forgotten treasure: After just nine stagings in the years 1895 and 1896, Frédégonde sank into oblivion for over a century. Things were complicated from the very start, beginning with the composition. When Ernest Guiraud died in 1892, only the first three acts of Frédégonde were complete. It was completed by Guiraud's friend Camille Saint-Saëns. The later's personal style, combining romantic harmonies with classical form, make this opera a unique testament to the musical variety of the late 19th century, in the vast shadow of Richard Wagner. – The Theater Dortmund stages the Merovingian historical drama about love, power and vengeance using a thrilling combination of theater and silent film. When Ernest Guiraud died leaving his Frédégonde unfinished , Saint-Saëns agreed to finish the work on condition that he be helped in his task by the young Paul Dukas, who was in charge of orchestrating half of the opera. Both are passionate about the bloody rivalry between Brunhilda and Frédégonde.
