This is a concert with depth. Bohuslav Martinů, the Bohemian composer born at the end of the 19th century, remains somewhat enigmatic. As one attempts to approach him, he seems to fascinatingly elude understanding; when one seeks to grasp the scope of his work, failure is almost guaranteed. The choice of solo instrument in his Rhapsody Concerto is therefore perfect: the dark-toned viola, played here by one of the most promising young artists of our time, Timothy Ridout. Conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe opens the evening with pure romanticism from the pen of Robert Schumann and, after the intermission, interprets Franz Schubert's Fourth Symphony, which the composer himself designated as "Tragic" in the score and composed in Beethoven's fateful key of C minor.
