Grüezi was created in 1934 for the Stadttheater Zürich and, with over 100 performances in the same season, is still one of the greatest Swiss theater successes.

In the same season, the play was adopted throughout Europe. For example, from mid-April 1935 it ran more than 50 times at the Scala in Vienna and in Berlin it filled the 3,000 seats of the Theater des Volkes every evening. Even after the Second World War, Grüezi was regularly performed under his numerous names and developed into one of the most frequently performed works by Robert Stolz up until the 1960s. Highlights were the Bregenz Festival in 1969 (under the name "Hochzeit am Bodensee") and the two productions at the Raimund Theater in Vienna in 1966 and 1975. From the Italian version "Ciao! Ciao!" there is also an operetta film by RAI.

Since the Solothurn performance in 1949, Grüezi has only been played in reduced versions with chamber ensemble or piano in Switzerland. For example in Sempach (1992), Kriens (1995), Root (1998), Münsingen (2001), Balgach (2007) and currently in Zurich (2018/2019). For the first time in 70 years, Grüezi was heard again in the full orchestral version in Switzerland.
