Gustaf Wasa takes place during the Danish siege of Stockholm in the early 1520s. A macabre highlight is the Danish king Kristian Tyrann's coronation banquet and the subsequent Stockholm bloodbath. The Danes threaten to continue the bloodbath with women and children unless Gustaf Wasa gives up the fight for freedom.

The music is composed by the German composer Johann Gottlieb Naumann, who was called to Sweden after Gustav III had an idea for an opera. The court poet Johan Henric Kellgren wrote the text, after detailed sketches by Gustav III. In 1786, Gustaf Wasa was first performed, which was Sweden's national opera for a long time. 

Naumann combined the best of Italian and French styles in music. "If the sublime and grandeur of the French opera is united with the melodiousness of the Italian, then this will be the most beautiful thing that this art can produce," he wrote in a letter. The opera was a success and is the most played Swedish opera of all time - then it fell into oblivion.

This gem is now given in a concert version and the singers come from the Swedish top tier. Among these can be mentioned the sopranos Elin Rombo and Hillevi Martinpelto, the tenors Michael Weinius and Joel Annmo and the baritone Karl-Magnus Fredriksson. Gustaf Sjökvist's Chamber Choir also takes part. Tobias Ringborg conducts, and has led the Royal Philharmonic on many occasions before. He often highlights Swedish repertoire, both older and newer.

Gustaf Wasa utspelar sig under den danska belägringen av Stockholm i början av 1520-talet. En makaber höjdpunkt är den danske kungen Kristian Tyranns kröningsbankett och det efterföljande Stockholms blodbad. Danskarna hotar att fortsätta blodbadet med kvinnor och barn om inte Gustaf Wasa ger upp frihetskampen.

Musiken är komponerad av den tyske tonsättaren Johann Gottlieb Naumann, som blivit kallad till Sverige efter att Gustav III hade fått en idé om en opera. Hovpoeten Johan Henric Kellgren skrev texten, efter utförliga skisser av Gustav III. 1786 uruppfördes Gustaf Wasa, som länge var Sveriges nationalopera. 

Naumann kombinerade det bästa från italiensk och fransk stil i musiken. ”Om det upphöjda och storslagna i den franska operan förenas med det melodiska i den italienska, då blir detta det skönaste som denna konst kan frambringa”, skrev han i ett brev. Operan blev en succé och är den mest spelade svenska operan genom tiderna – sen föll den i glömska.

Denna pärla ges nu i konsertversion och sångarna kommer från det svenska toppskiktet. Bland dessa kan nämnas sopranerna Elin Rombo och Hillevi Martinpelto, tenorerna Michael Weinius och Joel Annmo samt barytonen Karl-Magnus Fredriksson. Medverkar gör även Gustaf Sjökvists Kammarkör. Tobias Ringborg dirigerar, och har lett Kungliga Filharmonikerna vid många tillfällen tidigare. Han lyfter ofta fram svensk repertoar, både äldre och nyare.
