After languishing in the margins of musical history, Handel’s only Passion setting (first performed in Hamburg in 1719) is characterised by an extraordinary combination of humanity and beauty. Handel plunges into the narrative of the Passion with consummate dramatic skill using a vivid mixture of chorales, choruses and emotive recitatives in some of his finest music.
