The Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has already staged French operas (Rameau's Les Indes galantes and Gluck's Alceste ) at the Bavarian State Opera. With dancers from his company Eastman, he is developing Toshio Hosokawa's opera Hanjo as part of the Ja, Mai festival, dedicating himself to a cultural world that he has already immersed himself in in earlier works. In TeZuka , for example, he worked on Japanese manga by the artist Osamu TeZuka. In general, he is driven by an intercultural interest, for example for the Chinese Shaolin in his successful piece Sutra or the communication between cultures in Babel (words) . For hanjoCherkaoui works together with the Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, whose works range between visual and performance art, examine cultural and political action or – as with his cooking performances – create a place of gathering themselves. The musical direction of Hanjo is in the hands of Lothar Koenigs, who conducted the Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich both with Strauss repertoire and for operas of the 20th century such as Wozzeck and Chowanschtschina . For Hanjo , the Bavarian State Opera is cooperating with the Haus der Kunst, which is also the venue for the production.
