Cologne Opera - HÄNSEL UND GRETEL by Engelbert Humperdinck | Trailer

With the fairy tale opera "Hansel and Gretel" Engelbert Humperdinck achieved a stage success that has survived to the present day. The composer expanded the story of the siblings and the child-stealing witch residing in the gingerbread house to include the appearances of the dew man and the sandman, and created music that was as colorful as it was sonorous and rich in melody. Hardly any other work enjoys such popularity and enjoys so many performances as this musical fairy tale, which the Wagner admirer Humperdinck did not quite seriously call a »nursery consecration play«.

Of course, this name is already a reason for the lasting success of this piece, in which the innovations of Richard Wagner's music theater meet deeply catchy sounds derived from or related to folk songs. The attraction of this meeting of apparently heterogeneous elements forms an important element of the fairy tale opera, whose success for Humperdinck began with »Hansel and Gretel« and continued with »Königskinder« and »Sleeping Beauty«. Melodies reminiscent of folk music were to accompany his work constantly and not infrequently these became popular in the late-Romantic guise of Humperdinck's scores; just think of 'Brother, come dance with me' and 'Suse, dear Suse, what's rustling in the straw?'.
