The Musical Director of the OPRL, Gergely Madaras, and the musicologist Alexandre Dratwicki, Artistic Director of the Palazzetto Bru Zane - Center for Romantic Music, present Hulda, César Franck's third opera. A Norwegian legend which will be given in concert by the OPRL in May and June 2022 as part of the César Franck bicentenary of the OPRL, and which will be the subject of a new discographic project published by the Palazzetto Bru Zane.

Hulda , composed between 1879 and 1885, was never performed on stage during César Franck's lifetime and took more than a century to see her first complete creation (London, 1994). Inspired by a Norwegian play, this medieval legend closely follows Wagner's imagination without turning its back on the great French opera. Created in Monte-Carlo in 1894 in an abridged version and a minimalist staging, the work will then be cleverly "buried" by Franck's pupils. Preferring to keep the image of a composer of pure music, they reserved the glory of embodying the Wagnerian heritage on stage. If these issues are now obsolete, we still have Hulda, “A high-level score, overflowing with invention, with a powerful evocation, of a first-rate lyrical quality” according to Joël-Marie Fauquet, the composer's biographer.

Hulda, composée entre 1879 et 1885, ne fut jamais montée sur scène du vivant de César Franck et mit plus d’un siècle pour connaître sa première création intégrale (Londres, 1994). Inspirée d’une pièce norvégienne, cette légende médiévale suit de près l’imaginaire de Wagner sans tourner le dos au grand opéra français. Créé à Monte-Carlo en 1894 dans une version abrégée et une mise en scène minimaliste, l’ouvrage sera ensuite savamment « enterré » par les élèves de Franck. Préférant garder de lui l’image d’un compositeur de musique pure, ils se réservèrent la gloire d’incarner l’héritage wagnérien sur scène. Si ces enjeux sont aujourd’hui caducs, il nous reste Hulda, « une partition de haut vol, débordante d’invention, d’une force d’évocation prenante, d’une qualité lyrique de premier ordre »  selon Joël-Marie Fauquet, le biographe du compositeur.
