I Lombardi alla prima crciata was Verdi's fourth theatrical work. The plot derives from a recent epic poem by Tommaso Grossi, but while obviously sympathizing with the Christian army, and in particular with the sufferings of the brave Milanese volunteers, the work is not one-sided; indeed, it describes the destructive influence that clashes between political factions and hostile civilizations can exert on people's lives, and how even a murderer is capable of redeeming himself and achieving holiness. The ambitious subject is embodied in broad musical brushstrokes and in grandiose choral scenes with a strong dramatic impact
