Waiting for the Earthquake is based on Zinaida Lindén’s Runeberg Prize–winning book “I väntan på en jordbävning”. The chamber opera takes place in Tokyo on 11 March 2011, on a day of large earthquake. It’s a dreamlike journey which takes place in the recollections of the protagonist Ivan Demidov, a Russian firefighter, who is preparing to his very first sumo wrestling match. The events from Ivan’s past are set in just one day, which comes down more to images, thoughts, obsessions and feelings seeping into Ivan’s mind, than with memories. The most important of the events is his love to a Japanese girl called Taeko. Waiting for the Earthquake is performed in Swedish and it has surtitles in Finnish and in English. The duration of the performance is 75 minutes.
