The great Plácido Domingo gives a tour-de-force performance in the title role of the King of Crete—a man caught in a desperate trap of his own making. To survive a storm at sea he has made an oath that now forces him to sacrifice the life of his beloved son, Idamante (sung by an aristocratic Anne Sofie von Otter).
