Based on the comedy "Le Barbier de Séville ou La Précaution inutile" by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais

Rossini's popular work - which was first performed in 1816 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome - contains some of opera's most tuneful and recognizable music - from its lively overture to Figaro's Largo al factotum to Rosina's Una voce poco fa. Based on the play of the same title by the French dramatist Beaumarchais (1732-1799), the opera is a delightful rigmarole of riotous situations in a race to win the hand of the young Rosina. Vesselina Kasarovas Rosina made this production from 2001 of 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia' a memorable event. She captivated the audience with fluent coloraturas, an infinite variety of tone colors and nuances of expression, as well as her phenomenal versatility as an actress. Other soloists are Manuel Lanza, Carlos Chausson and Reinaldo Macias. The choir and orchestra of the Opera Zürich is led by Nello Santi.

n Zurich, a Barber of Seville full of energy and humour with a perfect Rosine

Filmed in April 2001 at the Zurich Opera, this Barber of Seville is by the excellent Rossini. Grischa Asagaroff's direction is full of inspiration and humour: the scenery, a huge fan (naturally since we are in Seville) which swivels facilitating the "production" of gags, and the transposition into the 1930s with the appropriate costumes, side-car and scooter is effective.

Acclaimed by the audience, the conductor Nello Santi, who is at home at the Zurich Opera (he was the musical director there for ten years, 1958-1968) is a Rossinian conductor of great stature who also plays the piano part. But the real jewel in this film is Rosine played by Vesselina Kasarova who is an authentic mezzo-soprano coloratura. A virtuoso musician and perfect actor, she is charm personified. Around her is an excellent distribution and it is a delight to see Nicolaoi Ghiaurov in the role of Basil which he performs with great experience.

The wonderful Zurich ensemble tells the first part of the story of Figaro, Rosina and Count Almaviva with an infectious sense of joy. Above all, Vesselina Kasarova brings the bright and imaginative scenery to life with her highly convincing portrayal of Rosina as an intelligent young woman.
