Count Almaviva fell in love with the beautiful Rosina and tried to pull out all the stops to impress her and to free her as quickly as possible from the clutches of Doctor Bartolo, her guardian. However, old Bartolo knows why he is suspicious of Rosina. If he marries her himself, the young woman's lavish inheritance beckons him as a morning gift. Almaviva is supported by his former valet Figaro, who has set up as a hairdresser in Seville. Figaro believes he is the brightest in Seville, but unfortunately his ideas almost always lead to disaster.
So his plan to have Almaviva take up quarters as a drunken soldier in Bartolo's house almost ends in prison. While Figaro ultimately even puts his barbering trade at the service of the cause, Almaviva comes closer to his goal on her own.
Of course, the sweeping rhythms, catchy melodies, sparkling ensembles and brilliant arias of the inimitable Rossini have made the largest contribution to this 200-year long lasting success. But one can also break a spear for the librettist. From Beaumarchais' successful piece, Cesare Sterbini has condensed one of the fastest comic operas of all time - with a whole arsenal of funny characters, tangible situational comedy, sudden events and hair-raising disguises. Sterbini unfolds an over-the-top game of pretense and confusion in which everyone believes they are smarter than the others.
