Il Borgomastro di Saardam by G.Donizetti, from Festival Donizetti Bergamo, performed at Teatro Sociale, Bergamo, 2017. Directed by Davide Ferrario, conductor Roberto Rizzi-Brignoli, starring Juan Francisco Gatell, Aya Wakizono, Andrea Concetti, Giorgio Caoduro, Irina Dubrovskaya, Pietro Di Bianco, Pasquale Scircoli, Alessandro Ravasio. Performed in Italian and subtitled in English, German, French and Italian.

ACT ONE 

In the naval workshop of Saardam, in the Netherlands, Peter the Great - traveling undercover to gain experience - pretends to be a carpenter (with the name of Peter Mikailoff).  Among the workers there is also Pietro Flimann, also a Russian but a deserter, in love with Marietta, whom Burgomaster Wambett acts as tutor.  Leforte arrives, general and confidant of the Tsar (also incognito), who announces the arrival at the construction site of the Burgomaster.  Flimann reveals to Mikailoff his condition as a deserter and his love for the girl who arrives at that moment with the carpenters' wives to bring lunch.  Marietta reveals to Flimann her love for him.  The Burgomaster arrives in search of a foreigner named Pietro, but at first he decides to let the two Russians go;  then Carlotta, daughter of Wambett, arrives along with a foreigner named Ali, on a diplomatic mission, also looking for a man named Pietro.  In a tavern, the two Pietro Mikailoff and Flimann) discuss love when the Burgomaster and Ali enter who in the end think that the Tsar is Flimann. 


SECOND ACT 

Believed to be Tsar, Flimann reveals the misunderstanding to Marietta.  Meanwhile, Leforte announces to Mikailoff the urgency to return to Russia to quell a revolt, using a ship that will soon be at anchor.  Wambett - who would like to become Marietta's husband from her tutor - begins to court her despite her denials.  Flimann is disheartened when, upon returning Leforte and Mikailoff, the true identity of the Tsar is revealed to general amazement;  the latter publicly forgives Flimann for his desertion, appoints him admiral of the fleet, a useful title to marry Marietta, and unites him in marriage with her beloved.  Everyone, except Wambett, celebrates, while Marietta launches into a song of grateful happiness. 


Overview 

ACT ONE 

﻿﻿﻿﻿In the shipyards of Saardam, in the Netherlands, Peter the Great – travelling in disguise – pretends to be a carpenter, going by the name of Pietro Mikailoff. One of the workers there is a Russian defector, Pietro Flimann, who is in love with Marietta, whose legal guardian is the mayor Wambett. General Laforte, the tsar’s confidant (himself in disguise), brings news that the mayor will be visiting the shipyard. Flimann reveals to Mikailoff that he is a defector and confesses his love for the Marietta, who appears that very moment with the carpenters’ wives to bring lunch to the workers. Marietta in the meantime tells Flimann that she loves him. The mayor arrives looking for a foreign man by the name of Pietro, but initially decides to let the two Russians go. In the meantime Carlotta, Wambett’s daughter, arrives with Alì, a foreign man who is on a diplomatic mission, and who is also looking for a man named Pietro. In a tavern, the two Pietro, Mikailoff and Flimann, are conversing about love when they are joined by the mayor and by  ﻿﻿﻿Alì, who end up thinking that Flimann is the tsar. 


SECOND ACT 

Flimann, who is now believed to be the tsar, explains the misunderstanding to Marietta. Leforte tells Mikailoff that he needs to urgently return to Russia, using a ship that is soon to be in the harbor, to quell a revolt. Wambett, intending to marry Marietta, begins to court her despite her refusals. Flimann is feeling disconsolate when Leforte and Mikailoff return and reveal the true identity of the tsar among general amazement. The tsar publicly pardons Flimann’s desertion and nominates him Admiral of his fleet – thus enabling him to marry Marietta – and celebrates their wedding. All but Wambett are celebrating and Marietta sings her song of happiness and gratitude.
