Opera buffa in un atto, nota anche con i titoli Il campanello di notte e Il campanello dello speziale, Il Campanello fu rappresentato per la prima volta al Teatro Nuovo di Napoli nel 1836. Il libretto, dello stesso Donizetti, è tratto da un vaudeville rappresentato a Parigi solo pochi mesi prima e testimonia la leggendaria rapidità del compositore che scrisse l’opera in otto giorni, per venire incontro alle richieste dell’impresario Filippo Pellegrino. Il successo della farsa risollevò le difficoltà economiche del Teatro Nuovo e dopo questo allestimento, che conteneva dialoghi parlati in napoletano, Donizetti aggiunse i recitativi in italiano con l’aiuto di Salvatore Cammarano, con cui aveva collaborato l’anno prima per Lucia di Lammermoor.

The synergy with the Ferrara Conservatory continues, presenting Gaetano Donizetti's Il Campanello on the stage of the Teatro Comunale , with a cast made up entirely of Frescobaldi students. On Friday 19 (for schools) and Saturday 20 May the comic opera will be staged by director Giovanni Dispenza. The Orchestra of the Frescobaldi Conservatory of Ferrara is conducted by Marco Titotto.

A miserly pharmacist about to get married, his young bride and a brilliant suitor who does not resign himself to the wedding of his former flame are the protagonists of II Campanello, a farce in one act by Gaetano Donizetti staged for the first time at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples in June 1836. With an exhilarating game of imaginative disguises, the disappointed lover will try in every way to prevent the wedding night from ending happily for the rival. The farce, which takes its cue from a French comédie-vaudeville, was offered free of charge by Donizetti – author of both the libretto and the music – to the company and impresario of the Teatro Nuovo, who were in serious difficulty due to the period of profound crisis that year it had afflicted the Neapolitan theaters. The contemporary press, in addition to appreciating the brilliance of the music, did not fail to praise the composer's singular generosity. In the first version, according to the customs of the Neapolitan farce, the dialogues were spoken and the part of the pharmacist Don Annibale Pistacchio was in Neapolitan dialect; the following year the farce was reworked with the inclusion of recitatives in Italian, the replacement of some numbers and the addition of a new duet; this is the version that will be staged by the students of the 'Girolamo Frescobaldi' Conservatory with the Orchestra conducted by Maestro Marco Titotto and the students of the singing classes. The participation of several students of Asian origin suggested to the director Giovanni Dispenza to set the performance in a welcoming and multicultural Naples, in which Don Annibale presents himself as an expert in Chinese medicine and the new bride Serafina is a beautiful oriental.
