In diesem »missing link« zwischen den Iphigenie-Opern Christoph Willibald Glucks und der ›Elektra‹ von Richard Strauss kommt nun endlich auch die betrogene Klytämnestra zu Wort.

Aufgrund der durch das Hochwasser verursachten Schäden, wird Nigel Lowerys packende Inszenierung einer der bekanntesten Geschichten der griechischen Mythologie leider nicht auf der Bühne des Wuppertaler Opernhauses stattfinden können. Glücklicherweise hat uns jedoch ähnlich wie in der ›Orestie‹, welche die textliche Vorlage von Sciarrinos neuestem Musiktheaterwerk bildet, ein günstiger Wind in das Erholungshaus nach Leverkusen geweht. Dort wird sich ab dem 23. Oktober 2021 der Vorhang für ›Il canto s’attrista, perché?‹ heben.

Aber worum geht’s eigentlich in diesem antiken Thriller?
In Mykene erfährt man von der Rückkehr des Königs Agamemnon, der nach zehn Jahren Krieg Troja erobert hat und nun mit Kassandra als Sklavin und Mätresse nach Hause kommt. Seine Gattin Klytämnestra kann ihm weder die damalige Opferung ihrer Tochter Iphigenie noch den jetzigen Ehebruch verzeihen und nimmt furchtbare Rache.

Salvatore Sciarrino ist nach mehreren Premieren und Uraufführungen in den letzten Jahrzehnten in Wuppertal kein Unbekannter. Seine letzte Uraufführung ›Ti vedo, ti sento, mi perdo‹ wurde als eine Koproduktion der Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin und der Mailänder Scala realisiert. Als einer der bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen italienischen Komponisten betrachtet er große Stoffe des Theaters von einer anderen Warte. Nach Versionen von ›Macbeth‹ und ›Lohengrin‹ wendet er sich nun der antiken griechischen Literatur zu.

In this “missing link” between Christoph Willibald Gluck's Iphigenia operas and Richard Strauss' 'Elektra', the betrayed Klytämnestra finally has her say.

Due to the damage caused by the floods, Nigel Lowery's gripping production of one of the most famous stories in Greek mythology will unfortunately not be able to take place on the stage of the Wuppertal Opera House. Luckily, as in the ›Orestie‹, which forms the textual model for Sciarrino's latest music theater work, a favorable wind blew us into the recreation center in Leverkusen. From October 23, 2021, the curtain will be raised there for ›Il canto s'attrista, perché?‹.

But what is this ancient thriller actually about?
In Mycenae we learn of the return of King Agamemnon, who has conquered Troy after ten years of war and is now coming home with Cassandra as his slave and mistress. His wife Klytämnestra can neither forgive him for the sacrifice of her daughter Iphigenia nor for the present adultery and takes terrible revenge.

Salvatore Sciarrino is no stranger to Wuppertal after several premieres and world premieres over the past few decades. His last premiere ›Ti vedo, ti sento, mi perdo‹ was realized as a co-production of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin and the Milan Scala. As one of the most important contemporary Italian composers, he looks at great theatrical material from a different perspective. After versions of ›Macbeth‹ and ›Lohengrin‹ he now turns to ancient Greek literature.
