Rinaldo Alessandrini, in 25 years of presence in Beaune, conducted with great success the complete operas and madrigals of Monteverdi. For the 40th anniversary of the festival, it is a hymn to beauty and love that Rinaldo Alessandrini offers here, confessing his fascination for this music of inexhaustible richness. "I include myself, he confesses, among the lovers of the Monteverdian ideal where everything is theatre: a theater made of humanity, of aspiration to the sublime and of joyful resolution of the sadnesses of life through the love, the healing power of song”. Echoing Rossini's Tancredi, we asked him to direct Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda from 1624. With this masterpiece, the fundamental rules of opera are laid down to express all human passions in music. In Il Combattimento, it is the very notion of the amorous confrontation that is brought on stage to the point of incandescence. At the crossroads of the cantata or the opera, this Combat marks a major stage in the evolution of Monteverdian dramaturgy in the same way as the Orfeo. The work is inhabited by an emotion and a frantic poetry, music of vertigo and passion, of pain and defiance, in the sign of the nocturnal confrontation of the Christian Tancred and the Saracen Clorinde whom he loves, but who he didn't recognize. We will also hear the famous and impressive Hor ch'el ciel on a poem by Rinuccini and Petrarch. All the performers of the Concerto Italiano are experienced in the vocal techniques of Italian Baroque. Pain, simplicity, emotion, fervor unite, in perfect balance, with the multiple expressions of bliss.
