If there is someone on this earth who knows the music of Joseph Haydn, then it is Giovanni Antonini. Back in 2014 the conductor began on a Herculean task: recording all 106 (!) of the composer’s symphonies with his orchestra Il Giardino Armonico. Since then, twelve volumes have been completed. Anyone who believes that the conductor has therefore had his fill of Haydn could not be more wrong. In between all the symphonic repertoire, Antonini still finds room for the oratorio Die Jahreszeiten, Haydn’s majestic song of praise to the cyclical rebirth of nature. Unlike Vivaldi’s instrumental seasonal sketch, Haydn draws the slipping away of the seasons in the grandest of forms: as an oratorio with spectacular choral parts that sing of the ‘burning summer sun’, ‘the lovely sight of leaping lambs’ or ‘the sharp breath of ice from the arid east’. Following years of absence from our stage, Antonini returns to the Blue Hall in 2023, together with his faithful companions from Il Giardino Armonico, the outstanding chamber choir of Wroclaw’s National Forum for Music and three leading soloists.

Als iemand op deze aardbol de muziek van Joseph Haydn kent, dan wel Giovanni Antonini. Al in 2014 startte de dirigent met een herculische opdracht: alle 106 (!) symfonieën van de componist opnemen met zijn orkest Il Giardino Armonico. Twaalf volumes zijn ondertussen ingeblikt. Wie denkt dat de dirigent daarmee wel zijn buik vol heeft van Haydn, heeft het goed mis. Tussen al het symfonische repertoire door, vindt Antonini nog een gaatje voor het oratorium Die Jahreszeiten, Haydns grootse loflied op de cyclische wedergeboorte van de natuur. In tegenstelling tot Vivaldi’s instrumentale seizoensschets, tekent Haydn het verglijden van de jaargetijden op z’n grootst: als oratorium met spectaculaire koorpartijen die de ‘brandende zomerzon’, ‘de lieflijke aanblik van huppelende lammeren’ of ‘de scherpe adem van ijs uit het dorre oosten’ bezingen. Na jaren afwezigheid op onze bühne komt Antonini in 2023 opnieuw naar de Blauwe zaal, samen met zijn trouwe metgezellen van Il Giardino Armonico, het uitstekende kamerkoor van het Nationaal Forum voor Muziek van Wroclaw en drie topsolisten.

S'il y a quelqu'un sur cette planète qui connaît la musique de Joseph Haydn, c'est bien Giovanni Antonini. En 2014, le chef d'orchestre s'est lancé dans une tâche herculéenne, l'enregistrement des 106 (!) symphonies de Haydn avec son orchestre Il Giardino Armonico. Douze volumes ont déjà été réalisés, mais l'amour que le chef voue à Haydn n'a toujours pas faibli. Au beau milieu de ces splendeurs symphoniques, Antonini trouve encore le temps de diriger l'oratorio Die Jahreszeiten, l'hommage grandiose du compositeur au renouveau cyclique de la nature. À l'opposé de l'évocation instrumentale des saisons par Vivaldi, Haydn dépeint l'alternance des saisons dans une œuvre grandiose. Son oratorio aux passages choraux spectaculaires chante « le soleil estival brûlant », « le tableau charmant des agneaux qui gambadent » et « le souffle glacé mordant venu de l'Est aride ». Après des années d'absence, Antonini revient dans notre Salle Bleue en 2023, flanqué de ses fidèles compagnons d'Il Giardino Armonico, de l'excellent chœur de chambre du Forum National de Musique de Wroclaw et de trois solistes d'exception.
