Azucena once witnessed her mother being burned as a witch. In revenge, she kidnapped the younger of the two sons of the old Count Luna who was responsible for this, but then – which nobody knows – in her madness she mistakenly threw her own son into the flames instead of him. Years later, the new Count Luna, the abductee's brother, and the "troubadour" Manrico, Azucena's supposed son, not only fight on opposing sides in the civil war, but also clash because they both love the lady-in-waiting Leonora. No one suspects that Manrico is actually Luna's kidnapped brother - until Leonora sacrifices herself for her lover and the hateful Luna kills her rival.
