Azucena once had to watch her mother being burned as a witch. In revenge, she kidnapped the younger of the two sons of the old Count Luna, who was responsible for the crime, but then - what no one knows - in her madness, she mistakenly threw her own son into the flames, rather than him. Years later, the new Count Luna, the brother of the kidnapped man, and the "troubadour" Manrico, Azucena's supposed son, not only fight on opposing sides in the civil war, but also clash because they both love the lady-in-waiting Leonora. No one suspects that Manrico is actually Luna's kidnapped brother - until Leonora sacrifices herself for her lover and the hateful Luna kills her rival.
