Опера «Путешествие в Реймс, или Гостиница “Золотая лилия”» была написана в 1825 году по случаю коронации короля Франции Карла Х, и ее сюжет разворачивается как раз вокруг коронации, куда стремятся успеть многочисленные гости. Сам Россини называл свое сочинение сценической кантатой, и действительно, оно отличается от оперной модели, привычной для этого мастера. В опере четырнадцать (!) главных персонажей, состоящих в весьма запутанных взаимоотношениях. Небольшие ариозо то и дело прерываются квартетами и секстетами. Композитор часто отступает от нормативов так называемой la solita forma (речитатив – медленная ария – быстрая кабалетта), притом россиниевский почерк узнаваем, требования к виртуозности крайне высоки, а музыка витальна, солнечна и прозрачна.

Успеха у публики эта гениальная феерия в свое время не получила; более того, поскольку она была написана по конкретному случаю, автор изначально и не рассчитывал на долгую репертуарную жизнь собственного творения. Партитура была отозвана из парижского театра Комеди Итальен и оказалась на полке. Музыка из «Путешествия в Реймс» появилась позже в опере «Граф Ори»: в те времена самоцитирование было обычной практикой. Столь разумный метод соответствовал и бонвиванству Россини: зачем изнурять себя сочинением новой музыки, если можно приспособить старую, которую все равно мало кто слышал? «Путешествие в Реймс» было вновь обнаружено только в 1977 году, в архиве римской консерватории Санта-Чечилия, где музыковеды Дженет Джонсон и Филип Госсетт нашли странные ноты «Графа Ори», в которых была неизвестная до тех пор музыка. После нескольких лет работы по восстановлению партитуры, в 1984 году состоялась премьера оперы на россиниевском фестивале в Пезаро, родном городе композитора. С тех пор опера вошла в мировой репертуар и много раз записывалась. В Мариинском театре «Путешествие в Реймс» поставили в 2006 году, с тех пор опера исполняется как в сценическом варианте, так и в концертном. Денис Великжанин

The opera Il viaggio a Reims, ossia L’albergo del giglio d’oro was composed in 1825 on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles X of France, and the plot unfolds in the lead-up to the coronation itself, which numerous guests are hurrying to attend. Rossini himself called his opus a stage cantata, and it does, in fact, stand apart from the operatic model one might typically associate with this maestro. The opera has fourteen (!) lead characters, all of them tangled up in a huge web of confusion. Brief ariosos are intermingled with quartets and sextets. The composer frequently abandons the norms of the so-called solita forma (recitative – lento aria – presto cabaletta), and we moreover recognise Rossini’s signature, the requirement of virtuoso skills is high and the music is life-affirming, sunny and transparent.

This magnificent féerie did not enjoy public acclaim at the time it was first presented; moreover, in as much as it was written for a specific occasion, the composer had not initially considered the possibility of his work having any long-term existence in the repertoire. The score was withdrawn from the Comédie-Italienne in Paris and left on the shelf. The music of Il viaggio a Reims was later to appear in the opera Le Comte Ory: at that time, quoting from one’s own works was a common practice. Such a sensible method also corresponded to Rossini’s sense of “bon vivance”: why exhaust oneself composing new music if one can use old music which in any case very few people have heard? Il viaggio a Reims was rediscovered only in 1977, in the archives of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where music historians Janet Johnson and Philip Gossett found the old sheet music for Le Comte Ory, containing hitherto unknown music. Following several years’ work to reconstruct the score, in 1984 there came the premiere of the opera at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, the composer’s home town. Since then the opera has gone on to enter the international repertoire and has been recorded on around many occasions.
