Bach composed the St. John Passion in 1724 immediately after taking up his position as Leipzig Thomaskantor. Intimately contemplative chorales and dramatic turbae choruses are interwoven into the passion events, as are the haunting arias that comment on the evangelist's biblical texts. Baroque musical splendor is always in the foreground of the solemn Passion oratorio.
